WP5: Nutrition & Oxidative Stress

This WP (leader: Dr. Biolo) will study the impact of whole body and muscle oxidative stress on muscle atrophy and insulin resistance. In order to relate oxidative stress changes with muscle atrophy, muscle mass and body composition changes will be assessed by Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) and bioimpedance, respectively. Before the study period, basal metabolic rate of each subject will be estimated according to standardised equations. During the ambulatory and bedrest periods, dietary energy intake will be calculated at 1.4 and 1.1 times basal metabolic rate, respectively. Energy intake will be weekly adjusted in order to avoid fat mass accumulation, i.e. positive energy balance.

                                                                                                                 OBJECTIVES

1: To determine the impact of oxidative stress measured at whole body level (blood markers) and in muscle biopsies on muscle atrophy and insulin resistance.

2: To evaluate thermogenesis and insulin resistance in adipose tissue within each campaign
