 The Metabolic Physiology Group at UoN has extensive experience of metabolic and nutritional studies in relation to physical activity, immobilization, insulin resistance and nutritional interventions. Professor Ian Macdonald has been a member of various ESA Advisory Committees in relation to Bed Rest and recently the group undertook a pilot study of the effects of hypoxia on resting metabolism and dietary thermogenesis in collaboration with JSI and KTH at the Planica facility.

Professor Ian A Macdonald is Professor of Metabolic Physiology at the University of Nottingham and is also Director of Research for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at UoN.  He is the immediate past-President of the Nutrition Society of Great Britain and Ireland and is a member of the UK Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition. He has published over 300 peer-review publications and has an H-index of 40. He has been a member of the European Space Agency Bed Rest Steering Committee (since 2007), and is a member of the ESA Topical Team on Lunar Habitat Simulations (established in 2009).
